I am not one of those people who is paranoid about safety when traveling but then again we do not travel to high risk places like Acapulco, Rio de Janeiro or certain countries in Africa, etc. So I was not really tuned into anti theft travel accessories until I read an interesting article about identity theft.
It turns out you can become a victim anywhere and there don’t even have to be an actual act of theft of property or robbery. I felt that I was way behind the technological advancements in terms of anti theft travel accessories when I learnt that your credit card or driving license information can be obtained without even touching your travel purse. In brief, it is a scanning technology that your company may use for you to scan your badge when you enter the company building, or the scanning machine at a train station, which scans you ride pass, or a machine at a library that reads your library card. The same technology can be used to scan your credit card information when the card is “safely” tucked way in your travel wallet, travel purse or pocket. A person only needs to approach you close enough with a specialized reader/scan. Unfortunately, it can happen anywhere, when you travel or when you are just walking down the street in you home town.

One of the items that is stolen most often is a cell phone. It can be easily retrieved from your pocket or snatched out of your hand so I cannot recommend a safety strap enough. I love universal straps that can be worn on your wrist or on your neck:
If you are worried about the theft of wallet, cell phone or documents from your bag, that someone can just cut or open your purse or backpack and get your valuables out while you are fully absorbed in enjoying a tourist destination, then look into getting a bag with hidden zippers and/or a built-in anti-theft technology (you cannot cut them with a knife because they have a special protective metal mesh inside).

The absolute best safety tip for travelers that I found out is this. If you don’t want to pick a fight with an attacker or your alarm has a dead battery or you forgot all your safety devices at home you can actually safely give the robber your wallet. Well, not your real wallet that is. You need to carry 2 wallets with you when you travel: one real one, and the other – cheap decoy. Put some small dollar bills in it, old membership cards, etc. Carry it in your pocket, not in a bag for fast retrieval. Then when a robber demands that you hand over your wallet, you give away the decoy 😉 !
