There are plenty of things to do in Half Moon Bay with kids. Most popular Half Moon Bay attractions are, of course, local farms and Half Moon Bay State Beach. But this article is about neither of them. Today I would like to to tell you about amazing, fascinating and creativity inspiring ODDYSSEA.
It is hard to describe Oddyssea in one word. It is a store, an attraction and an experience all at once. Oddyssea store sells natural “curiosities” for home décor and crafts: sea shells, minerals, plants and much more. But it also has a big outdoor garden that provides one of a kind hands-on, DYI, creative experience for kids and adults. Hence, Oddyssea’s motto is: Explore. Create. Discover. Here is why I put it on my list of great Half Moon Bay activities for kids.
You can book a classic Oddyssea garden experience with 2 activities of your choice ($35 per participating person) or a deluxe experience with 3 activities (2 of your choice plus 1 enchanted terrarium – $50 per person). Activities of choice are: message in a bottle, sand art, air plant creation, jewelry making and more. You get a complete kit at Oddyssea and they will set up a table for you with all the tools and let you create your masterpiece the way your imagination tells you. That said, the staff is nearby to help you with any issues you encounter in the process, such as, how do I open a pendant to insert a pearl inside?
We participated in the deluxe experience. My kids chose message in a bottle, sand art, air plant and a pearl necklace kits in addition to the enchanted terrariums. To be completely honest, my 7 year old son did not really choose the necklace, this is something that I REALLY wanted, so don’t judge 🙂
To say we had fun at Oddyssea in Half Moon Bay is to say nothing. We had an absolutely, positively fabulous time! Even my husband who never does any crafts, and I mean NEVER EVER, got super excited about creating his own air plant terrarium. You should have seen him picking and choosing décor and playing with his forceps! (well, actually, you can see him do just that – check our video at the end of the article).
The whole deluxe experience took us an hour. Typically, Oddyssea’s garden can fit many people at once, but at the time of pandemic you need to reserve your time slot in advance so it will be your own private experience just for your family.
When we are not faced with COVID-19 Oddyssea is a great place for parties – they can host up to 100 people, you can bring food and have a great time. Alternatively, Oddyssea can bring the party to you – they will pack all the supplies and come to your home if need be.
One thing I particularly liked about Oddyssea garden is that it had umbrellas for shade. Generally, Half Moon Bay is not known for hot sunny days but we were lucky to be in town when it was close to 80F so the shade was definitely needed and welcome.
Oddyssea is located in Half Moon Bay downtown, right on Main Street. We did not have any issues finding parking on the street right next to Oddyssea.
So next time you are thinking about things to do in Half Moon Bay with kids I strongly suggest considering Oddysea. I guarantee that you will have a unique and enchanted experience.
