I have done lots of water activities in my life and I am always searching for more. I think white water rafting is an ultimate water adventure. I have done it only once more than 20 years ago and that was way before kids. To be honest, I loved it, A LOT. My kids have not yet experienced the thrill of white water rafting any neither have my husband. How do you prepare someone for a thrilling adventure if that someone is really risk averse?

You do a lot of background information collection and start easy. Colorado is probably one of the best places in the U.S. for white water rafting. The sun’s rays blazing on the snow-capped mountains awaken the sleeping waterfalls. What starts as a trickle, gradually transforms Colorado into one of the best places in the US to experience the thrill of whitewater rafting.

From the Arkansas River to the Animas, the state boasts more than a dozen commercial rafting routes. People of all ages and experience levels can enjoy their time on the floats–from first-time novices to experienced thrill-seekers and families.

Those who seek an adrenaline-pumping experience will find Colorado white water rafting to be the perfect playground, with its unmitigated rapids and picturesque landscapes.

In this article, we will shed light on some of the most revered white water rafting spots in Colorado.

The Arkansas River – A Rafting Mecca

The Arkansas River is one of the most popular commercial rafted rivers in the state. According to the Echo Canyon River Expeditions, the river beginning at the Continental Divide, descends 5,000 feet over a distance of just a hundred miles!

Flowing through the heart of the Rockies, this mighty river offers an exhilarating mix of rapids, scenery, and accessibility. From the many options available, the Royal Gorge stands out as a must-try for adrenaline junkies opting for white-water rafting in Colorado.

This leg of the journey takes you through the narrow canyon, where you stand a bright chance of encountering rapids of Class IV and V intensity. The highlight of this route is the stunning suspension bridge that makes for a very enchanting sight.

The Browns Canyon section of the Arkansas River offers an exciting rafting experience for those looking for something a bit more relaxed. This renowned stretch provides breathtaking views of the Collegiate Peaks and its snow-capped mountains, lush forests, and diverse wildlife. As you traverse the Class III rapids, you can take in the stunning vistas of nature and wildlife. My personal rafting experience was with Class III rapids and trust me, they give enough thrills so you don’t need to start any higher as a beginner.

Clear Creek – A Close-to-Denver Adventure

If your travel base is Denver but you don’t want to spend all your time in Colorado in a big city but rather prefer to experience the thrill of outdoor adventure, then Clear Creek is your destination. What makes it a go-to option for city dwellers is its close proximity to the High Mile City.

Clear Creek boasts a variety of rapids, from beginner-friendly Class II stretches to adrenaline-pumping Class V sections, making it suitable for all skill levels.

This stretch of wilderness is known for its rich mix of wildlife, tumultuous terrain, and vibrant Denver-city life. There is a high possibility that you might come across bighorn sheep, take part in an exhilarating outdoor adventure, and also enjoy a night of dancing and shopping, all on the same day!

Moreover, after a day of exhilarating escapades, you can take some time off and visit historic Idaho Springs and engage in some hot potting – getting soaked in the rejuvenating mineral hot springs.

The Colorado River – A Scenic Marvel

If you seek a scenic whitewater rafting experience amidst the red sandstone cliffs, lush valleys, and majestic canyons, the Colorado River is one of the best options for you.

The Colorado River runs from the vicinity of Kremmling, heading southwesterly, passing through Radium, Glenwood Springs, and into Utah. It is a great destination for rafting lovers, providing family-friendly areas near Glenwood Springs and more challenging, intense rapids in Gore Canyon.

Regarded as one of the most fierce and epic whitewater destinations. It is reserved for seasoned campaigners and is home to intense Class IV and V rapids. The Glenwood Canyon, located much further downstream, is an ideal spot for families looking to embark on some beginner-level water adventure.

Take note, Glenwood Springs also has hot springs for your relaxation and enjoyment.

The Animas River – A Wild Ride through Durango

Durango, a historical town known for its narrow gauge railroad, is home to a very famous commercial rafting trail, the Animas River. The trail is flocked by rafters throughout the year.

Known for its challenging rapids and stunning canyons, the Upper Animas River is a favorite among experienced rafters seeking an adrenaline-fueled adventure. This section has the distinction of being the longest continuous stretch of class IV and V commercial rapids in the United States. The abundant flora and fauna add to the enchanting atmosphere of this fantastic ride.

But what if you are not an experienced rafter? Where should you go then? Don’t worry, the Lower Animas River, running through the town of Durango, offers an easier trail for beginners.

Conclusion

Nothing can ever prepare you for the surprises and the twists that come with gushing waters. The thrill of overcoming the steep falls and lashing waves comes second to none. Colorado boasts of some breathtaking river rafting trails that will etch lifetime memories in your heart.

But, whatever the situation be, you cannot let anything overpower your common sense. You need to be prepared for an accident or an unplanned event when in the water and wear protective gear at all times. Your guide is the most important person when on the float and you have to pay heed to everything that they say. Also choose a rafting company with lots of years of experience and solid reputation.

So, are you ready with your gear to experience the journey of a lifetime? Please, note that there are a couple of things that you will definitely need on a white water rafting trip.

What to take with you on a white water rafting adventure

Sport sandals with straps (no sneakers, flipflops and such) or tightly fitting water shoes. For years my absolute favorites have been Teva sandals because they are light, sturdy, supportive, durable and wallet friendly. And while water shoes are only good for water activities, Teva sandals are good for anything in addition to water activities: hiking, walking around town, etc.:

A hat and sunglasses with a strap. Wear a hat that will provide shade for you eye but also fit well under a helmet that you most likely will be requires to wear (the guide company will provide the helmet). Baseball cap will work best. If you wear regular or sunglasses make sure the is a strap attached to them like the one below:

If you are taking a cell phone with you then don’t forget a waterproof pouch for it:

And one more important thing: do not wear anything made of cotton! Cotton takes a long time to dry and becomes cold when wet. Wear clothes made of quick drying synthetic material:

In cooler weather wear waterproof and windproof lightweight jacket that will fit well under a life jacket:

Safe and happy travels!
