WARNING: after reading this article you will want to buy yourself a goat. Or two. Or start a goat farm like Harley Farms.

Harley Goat Farm located in Pescadero is a true gem and definitely a MUST VISTI farm in Bay Area. It is fun, family friendly and educational. Their farm tours are fantastic and we were super lucky they hosted us on one of their tours this past weekend. Harley Farms tours are so popular that they sell out well in advance and currently with lower throughput capacity because of COVID-19 there is even less availability – so hurry!

The best time to visit Harley Goat Farm is between February and May. This is the period when baby goats are born. If you always thought that puppies are the cutest animals, wait till you meet baby goats! You’ll want to take them home and best of all – they will want to come with you! They followed us around like dogs, climbed on our laps and gave us lots of snuggles. If you need a serious mood booster – come to Harley Goat Farm!

Each year more than 200 goats are born on Harley Farms and no matter which month you come from February to May you WILL see newborn babies who are the most adorable! Harley Farms organize two types of tours: a full one, which is a little longer than an hour and a shorter family one. The longer one is appropriate for older kids and it is very educational. The shorter tour is for younger kids and you will spend most of the time just with baby goats.

We went on a full tour and we really liked it. We walked all around the territory of Harley Farms, learnt about its history, farming in general, the goats, cheese making and much more. During the tour we got acquainted with both older goats (moms) and babies. My kids really got into it and asked lots of questions.

The highlight of the tour is, of course, quality time with baby goats who are about a week old. You can go into their pen and hug as many of them as you want. They are very friendly and they love people’s attention. I didn’t want to leave! May I camp here for the spring?

After the tour I suggest having a picnic at Harley Farm’s beautiful pond – there are several picnic table around it for your enjoyment. At the end of the tour you will be given a goody bag with goat cheese and crackers and it is a great opportunity to nibble on them at the pond and watch coots fooling around in the water. You may also meet friendly cats and dogs on the farm.

Harley Farms is more than a goat farm. They also make their own honey, jams and jellies which you can buy in their store for your picnic. If you are lucky you may even be able to get a hold of their yummy cheesecake! During our visit there were about a dozen varieties of goat cheese available in Harley Farms store and we bought 2 of them, which turned out to be pretty delicious.

One additional tip for visiting Harley Farms: you will be walking in the fields and in the goat enclosures so you need to be prepared for mud, water (this is the rainy season, after all) and goat pellets. I took my rain boots with me and couldn’t be happier. These are super cute, light on your feet and easy to put on and take off (they have some sort of silky coating inside that makes them slide on and off like a breeze):

A couple of notes about COVID-19 related procedures at Harley Farms. At this time the tours are limited to just a few people. There were only 3 families on our tour including us. Masks are required. Only 6 people are allowed in the store at any given time. So I think overall Harley Farms are doing a great job in terms of COVID-19 safety precautions.

I am pretty sure that visiting Harley Goat Farm will become our family’s yearly tradition from now on. I personally would love to attend one of their farm to table dinners too, which are, unfortunately, currently postponed due to the pandemic.
